Sarah is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a longstanding interest in psychology that is evident in both her clinical practice and academic career. She received her Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology in 2015 and is currently completing her Ph.D in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia, where she is involved with research projects concerning the career decision-making processes of Indigenous and immigrant Canadians. Sarah strongly believes that skilled practitioners are lifelong learners, and is continuously looking for new skills, interventions, and approaches to add to her repertoire in order to best meet her client's needs.
Sarah's clinical experience includes practicing at Vancouver Coastal Health's Eating Disorder Program, where she saw individual clients and conducted and designed support and psychoeducational groups. She has also designed and facilitated CBT-based groups for anxiety, depression, and interpersonal skills at the Mood Disorders Association of British Columbia. Sarah is currently practicing at the Mood Disorders Association of British Columbia in addition to her private practice. She also sits on the executive committee for the Employee Assistance Professionals Association.
Sarah's approach to counselling is the same for all clients in the sense that she employs a strengths-based approach to working with client issues. Sarah is primarily a CBT therapist, as she believes that behaviours, thoughts, and emotions work together to contribute to individual problems and can be utilized to promote change. However, she also believes that each individual is unique, and as such there is no "one size fits all" for working with clients.
Above all, Sarah approaches work with her clients by employing a combination of genuineness, honesty, and warmth. She strongly believes in meeting clients where they are at and in working alongside them, rather than jumping ahead or trailing behind. If you have any questions about Sarah's approach to therapy or whether she would be a good fit for you, get in touch with her at Sarah@Beckerburrows.com.
When Sarah is not counselling or researching, she is travelling and enjoying B.C.'s beautiful
outdoors, whether it is scuba diving, kayaking, skiing, or cooking by the campfire.
